The story

Story Behind the Sculpture

Behold the Lamb of God was created to present the Crucified Christ not only as an image of suffering, but as an encounter with sacrificial love.

Even from the Cross, Christ’s eyes remain open and directed toward us. His hands are extended, His expression gentle and merciful—inviting the viewer to see beyond His suffering to the love with which He freely gives Himself.

When placed behind an altar, the sculpture takes on an especially powerful meaning. At the elevation of the Host, the sacrifice made present in the Eucharist is visually united with the sacrifice of Christ upon the Cross. The title recalls the words proclaimed at every Mass: “Behold the Lamb of God.”

Crucified Christ — detail

What the details mean

Symbolism

Crucified Christ — The Gaze of Christ

The Gaze of Christ

Christ looks outward toward the congregation. His expression is intended to create a personal encounter with the faithful—a gaze of mercy, compassion, and love even in the midst of suffering.

Crucified Christ — The Outstretched Hands

The Outstretched Hands

His hands remain open and extended upon the Cross. Rather than appearing closed or withdrawn, they convey an invitation: Christ continues to reach toward us.

The Crown of Thorns

The crown recalls Christ’s humiliation and suffering while pointing to the paradox at the heart of the Passion: the mocked King is truly the King of Kings.

The Cross and the Altar

When the crucifix is installed within the sanctuary, particularly behind the altar, the relationship between Calvary and the Eucharist becomes immediately visible. The Cross reveals the sacrifice that the Mass makes sacramentally present.

Scripture reflection

Scripture Reflection

John 1:29

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

John the Baptist’s words identify Christ as the Lamb who will offer Himself for the salvation of the world. At every Mass, those words are heard again as the priest elevates the Eucharist: “Behold the Lamb of God.”

Placed within the sanctuary, Behold the Lamb of God draws these moments together—the Lamb proclaimed in Scripture, the Christ who offers Himself upon the Cross, and the Eucharistic sacrifice made present upon the altar.
