The story

Story Behind the Sculpture

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis repeatedly called the Church to go out to others—to encounter people personally, listen to them and accompany them along the journey of faith.

Walking Together captures that spirit through a warm, human moment. Francis stands with two children gathered closely beside him, his hand raised in greeting and blessing. Rather than presenting the pope as a distant figure, the sculpture places him among the young people he serves.

The composition becomes an image of the Church Francis envisioned: generations walking together, welcoming one another and carrying the faith forward with hope.

What the details mean

Symbolism in the Sculpture

Pope Francis — The Children

The Children

The two children represent both the young people Francis so often encouraged and the generations to whom the Catholic faith is entrusted. Their closeness to him conveys trust, affection and belonging.

Pope Francis — The Raised Hand

The Raised Hand

Francis raises his hand in a familiar gesture of greeting and blessing. It opens the composition outward, inviting those approaching the sculpture to become part of the encounter rather than simply observing it.

Pope Francis — Walking Together

Walking Together

The title reflects one of the defining themes of Francis's pontificate: synodality—from a Greek expression meaning to journey or walk together. Here, that idea becomes tangible. Francis is not represented alone, but in relationship with the children beside him.

The Embrace

The young girl wraps her arms around Francis, transforming the sculpture from a formal papal portrait into an intimate encounter. Her gesture reflects the accessibility and tenderness that became hallmarks of his public ministry.

The Rosary

Held by the boy at Francis's side, the rosary anchors the composition in prayer and Marian devotion. It reminds viewers that walking together as a Church begins with a shared life of faith.

About the saint

About Pope Francis

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Pope Francis entered the Society of Jesus and was ordained a priest in 1969. He later served as Archbishop of Buenos Aires and was created a cardinal by Pope Saint John Paul II.

Elected pope in 2013, Francis became the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas and the first to take the name Francis. His pontificate placed particular emphasis on mercy, encounter, care for those on the margins, responsibility for creation and a Church willing to accompany people rather than remain distant from them.

Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025. His legacy continues in his call for Catholics to encounter one another with compassion and to become a Church that journeys together.
