Fisher of Men
An original Indweller design (rendered with AI) depicting Saint James the Great as an unseen intercessor and journey companion, walking beside two children and casting his fishing net around them as a sign of guidance, protection and the call to follow Christ.
The story
Story Behind the Sculpture
Saint James walks beside two children, yet they seem almost unaware that he is there. They continue forward naturally, absorbed in their own journey, while their heavenly companion remains close beside them.
That relationship is at the heart of Fisher of Men. James is not portrayed as a distant saint waiting to be approached. He is an intercessor and companion, traveling alongside those entrusted to his care even when his presence cannot be seen.
The children give the sculpture a particular sense of movement. They are going somewhere, growing and moving forward into lives whose paths they cannot yet know. James accompanies them on that journey, suggesting the unseen presence of the Communion of Saints within the everyday lives of the faithful.
His fishing net draws the composition together. James was a fisherman when Christ called him to become a disciple, and the net recalls Jesus' invitation to become a fisher of men. Here, however, the net also surrounds the children almost like a mantle of protection, visually gathering them within James' care.
The sculpture ultimately asks the viewer to consider a comforting possibility: we may be accompanied more closely than we realize. The children do not need to see James for him to walk beside them. His intercession is represented as a quiet, faithful presence accompanying them along the road.

What the details mean
Symbolism

The Walking Staff and Pilgrim Shell
The walking staff and pilgrim shell are traditional attributes of Saint James, making him immediately recognizable within the sculpture. They identify the unseen figure walking beside the children as James and reinforce the sense that he is accompanying them on their journey.

The Fishing Net
The net recalls James' life as a fisherman and Christ's call to become a fisher of men. It connects James' earthly vocation with his mission as an Apostle.

The Children
The children represent those still beginning their journey of faith. Their apparent unawareness of James reinforces the sculpture's central idea: he accompanies them whether or not they know he is there.

The Unseen Saint
The children seemingly do not notice James beside them. This is intentional. His presence represents the unseen intercession of the saints—close to the faithful even when that companionship cannot be perceived.
The Net as Protection
As the net extends around the children, it takes on a second meaning. Rather than trapping or restraining them, it appears to gather and shelter them, becoming a visual expression of James' intercessory care.

About the saint
About Saint James the Great
Saint James the Great was one of the Twelve Apostles and the brother of Saint John the Evangelist. A fisherman by trade, James was called by Jesus while working with his father, Zebedee, and immediately left his nets to follow Christ.
Along with Peter and John, James belonged to the small group of disciples invited to witness some of the most significant moments of Jesus' ministry, including the Transfiguration and Christ's agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
James later became the first of the Apostles to suffer martyrdom. According to the Acts of the Apostles, he was put to death by King Herod Agrippa I.
For centuries, Saint James has also been closely associated with pilgrimage and journey, making the image of James walking beside the children especially fitting. In Fisher of Men, he remains a companion along the way—present, watchful and close.
